abortion

In June of this year, the Supreme Court ruled to overturn the previously held decision in
Roe v Wade – this ruling reversed the precedent on abortion in America, giving individual states the power to allow, limit, or ban abortion access. This overturn DID NOT actually make abortion illegal in the United States overall – which creates a space for conversation about what this means for us in Texas.
Texas does have a “trigger” law which will make abortion illegal in Texas once the law is enacted.
*A woman who has an abortion, or who has previously obtained an abortion cannot be prosecuted.
*Abortion IS ALLOWED if the life of the mother is at risk.
*A miscarriage, treatment for a miscarriage, and treatment for ectopic pregnancy IS NOT an abortion and is legal.
*It is ILLEGAL to have abortion pills mailed/shipped into Texas.
*If a woman changes her mind after taking the first dose of the abortion pill, a reversal medication is available.
*It is still LEGAL to obtain an abortion in states that allow it.
*The overturn of Roe v Wade DOES NOT affect access to emergency contraception or birth control.
Birth control is still legal. Some birth control can be obtained without a prescription - like condoms
(both male and female),spermicide, and contraceptive sponges. A doctor or nurse practitioner can provide prescriptions for
other types of birth control. It is a good idea to ask your medical care provider questions about
options which would best suit your needs.
