The Importance of Breast Cancer Screening

Posted By: Parkridge Employee | October 15, 2020

October is such a wonderful month. From pumpkin spice, to Fall leaves, sweaters to cozy blankets - we love this time of year. October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Maybe this is something you’ve never thought of or maybe this is something that has deeply affected you and your loved ones. Either way, we want to take a minute to remind you about the importance of breast health and breast cancer screening.

It is recommended that you do monthly self breast exams – to check your body for unusual changes, lumps, discharge, or anything “out of the ordinary”. Talk to your doctor about your risk factors, and ask about their recommendations for breast cancer screening. Breast health is an important part of your well-woman care, and a annual exam or pap smear appointment is a great time to bring up any questions or concerns.

Parkridge does not provide well-woman exams or mammograms, yet we can connect you with those in our community who do. Remember to reach out to us if you have need for pregnancy testing, STD testing, or counseling.

Where Can I Get a Mammogram?

1.    Start with your primary care or OBGYN. Ask for a recommendation.

2.    Contact the National Cancer Institute.

3.    CDC’s National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program works with health departments and other groups to provide low-cost or free mammograms to women who qualify. Find out if you qualify.
